The Layover

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. When your flight is delayed and so you miss your flight, take advantage of this newfound 16 hour layover in Singapore! It also didn’t hurt that our airline was covering all costs on accommodation, meals and taxis to and from the airport (thanks Singapore Airlines!).

After many sincere apologies from everyone at the airline, we made our way downtown. I was truly amazed by the pristine and garbage-less streets, as well as by the Singaporeans incredible hospitality. This modern and relatively young city-state boasts 4 official languages (English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil) and a nominal GDP per capita of USD$55,182 (Canada’s is CAD$45,029). It is one of the world’s major commercial hubs, exemplified by the cluster of skyscrapers and luxury shops and hotels downtown.
